Do tradespeople still need a website in 2026?

You can run a trades business without a website. The real question is whether having a good one makes it easier for a potential customer to choose you.

Think about what a customer does after hearing your name

Someone recommends your company. The customer takes out their phone and searches for you.

They may find your Google Business Profile, Facebook, a directory and your website. At that point they are often checking whether the business looks genuine, whether you do the job they need, where you work and how to contact you.

A good website gives you control over those answers.

But all my work comes from recommendations

That is a strong position to be in. A website does not replace recommendations. It supports them.

If somebody recommends a roofer, the customer may still search the business before calling. The recommendation creates trust. The website can reinforce it or undermine it.

I already have Facebook

Facebook is useful. It is not the same as owning your own website.

Your website gives you a permanent place to organise your services, projects, contact information and business story. Social media is better thought of as one way people can discover or follow you. The website is somewhere you control.

A website does not create traffic by magic

Putting a website online does not mean thousands of local customers will suddenly arrive. People still need a reason and a route to reach it.

That may come from Google, your Business Profile, advertising, social media, directories, referrals or your existing reputation.

Once they arrive, the website has a different job. It needs to turn interest into confidence, then confidence into action.

What should a trades website actually do?

It does not need clever animations or complicated technology. It needs to answer sensible questions.

What do you do? Where do you work? Can I see examples? Can I trust you? How do I contact you? What happens next?

If a customer can answer those questions quickly, the website is doing something useful.

Does every trades business need a huge website?

No. Some businesses only need a professional one-page site. Others need five pages. Established businesses offering several services across several locations may need 15–20 pages or a bespoke project.

More pages do not automatically make a better website. There should be a reason for every page.

The real purpose of a trades website

Your website should make the business look as professional online as it is when you turn up to do the work.

It should give customers confidence, explain the jobs you want and make contacting you easy. That is enough reason for most established trades businesses to have one.
